 Duke Ellington - Harlem
(1952)

Journey from the heartland of America to
the busy streets of Harlem, with a detour to the islands of the Caribbean added
for good measure! Tonights concert will feature great works by two of the
most important composers in American history Charles Ives and jazz great
Duke Ellington as well as a world premiere by internationally acclaimed
pianist, composer and educator Rebeca Mauleón. Widely regarded
as a true American masterpiece, Ives Second Symphony artfully weaves
material from popular folk tunes such as Columbia the Gem of the Ocean
and Camptown Races into an original work that still has much in
common with the older European style. Duke Ellingtons Harlem, from
its sultry beginning to its flashy big-band middle and beyond, gave Ellington
the opportunity to make some statements on the subject of Harlem, the
music and the people. Rebeca Mauleón, one of four composers from
non-classical genres selected for a New Visions/New Vistas commission, brings
her love of such diverse genres as Afro- Caribbean music, Jazz and Flamenco to
her first composition for full orchestra.. (Suitable for
children 10 and over.) |
